Celebrating 25 Years of Spazju Kreattiv: Nurturing Legacy Through Art

F’dawn l-aħħar snin, Spazju Kreattiv wettaq xogħol arkivjali sinifikanti fuq il-kollezzjoni permanenti tal-arti tiegħu, li rriżulta f’dokumentazzjoni u preservazzjoni bir-reqqa. Din l-inizjattiva wasslet għal sensiela ta’ wirjiet li juru kemm in-natura tax-xogħlijiet kif ukoll l-approċċ li qed jevolvi tal-organizzazzjoni għall-akkwist tal-arti. Permezz ta’ dan l-istudju dettaljat, ġie żviluppat ukoll arkivju diġitali tal-kollezzjoni li sar aċċessibbli għall-pubbliku.

Hekk kif l-organizzazzjoni tiċċelebra l-25 anniversarju tagħha, din tidħol f’fażi ġdida ta’ tkabbir u riflessjoni. Biex jimmarkaw dan l-anniversarju, ġew ikkummissjonati erba’ artisti prominenti—kull wieħed minnhom figura ewlenija fis-settur tal-arti u kontributur sinifikanti għall-evoluzzjoni ta’ Spazju Kreattiv bħala attur ewlieni u innovatur fil-qasam.

Din l-inizjattiva l-ġdida mhux biss tagħti ġieħ lil-legat ta’ dawn l-artisti iżda tħeġġeġ ukoll riflessjoni kontinwa dwar ir-rilevanza tal-kollezzjoni fix-xenarju kulturali tal-lum. Permezz tal-kummissjonar ta’ xogħlijiet ġodda li għandhom jiżdiedu mal-kollezzjoni permanenti, Spazju Kreattiv jafferma mill-ġdid l-impenn tiegħu għall-innovazzjoni artistika, id-djalogu kritiku, u l-evoluzzjoni kontinwa tal-arkivju tiegħu. Huwa jenfasizza wkoll id-dedikazzjoni dejjiema tal-organizzazzjoni għat-trawwim tal-kreattività u l-enfażi fuq ir-rwol vitali tal-arti u l-kultura fil-politika nazzjonali ta’ Malta.

Vince Briffa

Vince Briffa huwa artist multimedjali, kuratur u riċerkatur. Ix-xogħol trans-dixxiplinarju u trans-medjatiku tiegħu jikkonsisti f’pittura, skultura, vidjow u installazzjoni.

Huwa Professur tal-Arti fl-Università ta’ Malta, Fellow ta’ Civitella Ranieri Foundation, New York; u International Associate Internazzjonali, CUT Contemporary Fine Arts Lab, Università tat-Teknoloġija, Ċipru u l-Scuola di Cinema, Accademia di Belle Arti, Katanja, Sqallija. Huwa ngħata l-premju ‘Omaggio all’Arte ed all’Innovazione a Venezia 2019’ fil-Biennale tal-Arti ta’ Venezja tal-2019.

Ix-xogħol ta’ Briffa ġie esebit f’diversi postijiet prestiġjużi fosthom il-Padiljun ta’ Malta fil-Biennale tal-Arti ta’ Venezja, 1999 u 2019; il-Mużew Pierides Museum, Ċipru; Palais des Nations, l-Isvizzera; il-Mużew tal-Arti Moderna, Liechtenstein; il-Mużew Casoria, Napli; Villa Manin Arti Kontemporanja, l-Italja; MAC, l-Arġentina; Palais Liechtenstein, l-Awstrija; il-Mużew tal-Arti Museum of Fine Arts, ir-Rumanija u l-Museumżew of tal-Arti Moderna Art, l-Iżrael. Huwa ġie kkummissjonat biex jiddisinja l-monument biex ifakkar il-Valletta Summit dwar il-Migrazzjoni fil-Belt Valletta fl-2015. Ix-xogħol tiegħu jifforma parti minn bosta kollezzjonijiet privati ​​u pubbliċi lokali u internazzjonali.

Briffa huwa wkoll kuratur ta’ wirjiet lokali u internazzjonali li jinkludu l-NRW-Forum, Düsseldorf; il-Münchner Künstlerhaus, Munich; Les Rencontres Arles; De Harmonie, Leeuwarden; Spazju Kreattiv u l-Mużew tal-Arti, il-Belt Valletta fost ħafna oħrajn.

Nepenthos

Dan ix-xogħol huwa parti minn serje li għadha għaddejja bit-titlu The Islands of Odysseus (Il-Gżejjer ta’ Odissew).

Il-pittura tixbah mappa ta’ arċipelagu fittizju donnu labirint, li jidher pjuttost divertenti iżda huwa ta’ theddida għal Odissew li jrid jinnavigah. Ix-xogħol huwa metafora viżiva għall-pajsaġġ psikoloġiku tal-memorja u tan-nisi esplorat fl-Odissea ta’ Omeru.

It-titlu Nepenthos ġej minn “nepenthe”, droga mitika li tissemma f’din l-epika, li tkeċċi n-niket u l-memorji tad-dwejjaq. Helen* tirċievi din id-droga mingħand Polidamma, reġina Eġizzjana, u tużaha biex tgħin lill-mistednin jinsew it-toqol tagħhom permezz ta’ nisi terapewtiku.

Dan il-kunċett huwa marbut mal-Lotus Eaters (dawk li jieklu l-frotta tal-lotus), li jiltaqa’ magħhom Odissew fil-vjaġġ tiegħu lura d-dar minn Trojja. Meta jieklu l-pjanta tal-lotus, din tikkawża amnesija mimlija ferħ, li ġġegħilhom jitilfu kull xewqa li jirritornaw lura d-dar, u li tirrappreżenta n-nisi bħala evażjoni totali aktar milli fejqan.

Dawn iż-żewġ forom ta’ nisi jilluminaw in-natura paradossali tal-memorja fin-navigazzjoni tal-ħajja. Hekk kif Odissew ibaħħar l-arċipelagu perikoluż tiegħu, huwa jakkumula memorji ta’ niket ta’ passaġġi żbaljati u ħbieb mitlufa, li jtaqqlu kull għażla ġdida li jagħmel. In-nepente ta’ Helen joffri serħan ikkalkulat – mistrieħ temporanju li jippermetti li l-vjaġġ jitkompla – filwaqt li l-lotus twiegħed ħarba totali min-navigazzjoni nnifisha, u tħassar mhux biss l-uġigħ iżda wkoll l-għarfien li nkiseb b'diffikultà dwar stretti perikolużi u portijiet kennija.

Odissew jiffaċċa t-tentazzjoni kostanti li jabbanduna r-rotta kumplessa tiegħu lura lejn id-dar biex jintelaq mal-kurrent mimli hena tal-Lotus Eaters. L-eroiżmu tiegħu jinsab fil-fatt li huwa jagħżel it-tbatija sinifikattiva tal-memorja ta’ kull lezzjoni minflok il-paċi seduttiva tan-nisi totali, filwaqt li jifhem li għalkemm il-memorja tan-navigazzjoni ġġib magħha d-diqa ta’ qalb, hija din biss li tippermettilu jivvjaġġa qalb il-kurrenti perikolużi u jsib it-triq lura lejn Itaka.

OUTLAND

OUTLAND inħoloq bħala installazzjoni tal-vidjo, tal-awdjo, tal-vuċi u tal-ilma għall-Padiljun ta’ Malta fit-58 Biennale tal-Arti ta’ Venezja fl-2019. Huwa rebaħ il-premju prestiġjuż 'Omaggio all’Arte ed all’Innovazione a Venezia 2019'.

Ix-xogħol huwa bbażat fuq l-Odissea ta’ Omeru u jesplora l-indeċiżjoni umana u l-kumplessità tar-relazzjonijiet tagħna, u jirrifletti dwar dir-rifjut ta’ Odissew tal-immortalità ta’ Kalipso u xi jfisser verament li tkun uman.

Huwa jirrappreżenta t-taqbida tagħna mar-realtà u x-xewqa tagħna li naħarbu mill-ansjetà tal-libertà. Joħloq mill-ġdid il-Gżira ta’ Kalipso ta’ Ulisse – dik il-ġenna fejn sab il-kenn – bħala spazju immaġinarju ta’ tgawdija pura, mhux minħabba Kalipso jew ix-xenqa tiegħu għal Penelope, iżda minħabba l-post innifsu.

Iżda l-ġenna toħloq nuqqas ta’ nuqqas. Meta x-xewqa tiġi sodisfatta, id-dwejjaq jittrasforma l-ansjetà f’xi ħaġa ġdida. Ma rridux dak li naħsbu li rridu – irridu x-xewqa nnifisha. OUTLAND isir metafora għall-ansjetà li tiġi meta aħna niddefinixxu mill-ġdid lilna nfusna u r-relazzjonijiet tagħna kostantement, mir-rifjut tagħna li nibqgħu fi ħdan konfini sikuri. Huwa joħroġ mumenti ta’ spostament volontarju, fejn nagħżlu l-inċertezza minflok portijiet
mimlijin paċi.

Ix-xogħol jiddefinixxi mill-ġdid id-“dar”, mhux bħala ġeografija, iżda bħala l-ispazju intimu magħluq tagħna. Jirrifletti dwar il-piż emozzjonali tal-ispostament, it-tfittxija għall-appartenenza, b’mod partikolari fil-Mediterran. Permezz tan-narrattiva qisha ħolma tiegħu, il-film jindirizza lil dawk li ħallew art twelidhom biex ifittxu futuri aħjar, u lil dawk li għażlu li jibqgħu hemm u joħolqu l-ispazji tal-ħolm tagħhom permezz tad-distrazzjoni.

Filwaqt li jħares lura lejn il-mitoloġija, OUTLAND jagħmel referenza għall-kundizzjoni ta’ tbatija emozzjonali, l-indeċiżjoni tat-tluq, meta niċċaqalqu mill-periferija familjari tagħna lejn ċentru mhux magħruf. Jittratta l-uġigħ tal-maħbubin tagħna li nħallu warajna, li huma ppreservati biss fil-memorja.

B’mod konsistenti mat-tifsira tiegħu, OUTLAND jippreżenta d-“dar” bħala refuġju dgħajjef, kontenitur għas-sikurezza fraġli u għall-aljenazzjoni tagħna, post fejn jiġi arkivjat il-ħin imqatta’ fi stat ossessiv u ta’ prokrastinazzjoni.

Miġbud fil-kampanja li dejjem qed tonqos ta’ Malta u qalb l-arkitettura rikka tal-Belt Valletta, il-film jirrifletti r-relazzjoni li tinbidel bejn iċ-ċentru u l-periferija fuq din il-gżira żgħira fejn il-konfini huma mċajpra. In-narrattiva tiżvolġi f’terrain vague, spazju mhux ċar ta’ insikurezza li jikxef it-taqbida tagħna mar-realtà u x-xewqa tagħna li naħarbu mill-ansjetà privileġġata tal-libertà.

OUTLAND jippreżenta l-baħar Mediterran bħala l-metafora aħħarija. Is-salini – post ta’ separazzjoni fejn l-ilma baħar jinżamm metaforikament priġunier mill-art biex jiġi estratt il-melħ tiegħu – bil-medda riflettiva tagħhom, bħal grilja li tirrifletti r-repetizzjoni kontinwa tal-istrutturi ġeometriċi tal-immaġnijiet fuq l-iskrin, li jenfasizzaw viżwalment l-intervent ikkalkulat tal-bniedem fit-tarf nett tal-ambigwità topografika tan-natura, filwaqt li jisfidaw il-konfini li dejjem jinbidlu bejn il-baħar u l-art, dik il-barriera metaforika li ssaħħaħ l-għażla inċerta tagħna bejn is-sikurezza tad-dar u l-ġibda ta’ orizzonti ġodda.

In recent years, Spazju Kreattiv has undertaken significant archival work on its permanent arts collection, resulting in thorough documentation and preservation. This initiative has led to a series of exhibitions that showcase both the nature of the works and the organisation’s evolving approach to acquiring art. Through this detailed study, a digital archive of the collection has also been developed and made publicly accessible.

As the organisation celebrates its 25th anniversary, it enters a new phase of growth and reflection. To mark this milestone, four prominent artists have been commissioned—each a leading figure in the arts sector and a significant contributor to Spazju Kreattiv’s evolution as a key stakeholder and innovator in the field.

This new initiative not only honours the legacy of these artists but also encourages ongoing reflection on the collection’s relevance in today’s cultural landscape. By commissioning new works to be added to the permanent collection, Spazju Kreattiv reaffirms its commitment to artistic innovation, critical dialogue, and the continuous evolution of its archive. It also underscores the organisation’s enduring dedication to nurturing creativity and emphasising the vital role of arts and culture within Malta’s national policy.

Prof. Keith Sciberras and Mr Daniel Azzopardi will be in dialogue with the artist Prof. Vince Briffa about his artistic practice, touching on the differences and similarities between his painting, video and installation work; as well as the realities and broader contexts of contemporary art practice.

Vince Briffa

Vince Briffa is a multimedia artist, curator and researcher. His cross-disciplinary and trans-mediatic work consists of gallery and site-specific artwork, sculptural objects, video and installations.

He is a Professor of Art at the University of Malta, Fellow of Civitella Ranieri Foundation, New York; and International Associate, CUT Contemporary Fine Arts Lab, Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus and the Scuola di Cinema, Accademia di Belle Arti, Catania, Sicily. He was awarded the prize ‘Omaggio all’Arte ed all’Innovazione a Venezia 2019’ at the 2019 Venice Art Biennale.

Briffa’s work has been exhibited in numerous prestigious venues including the Malta Pavilion, Venice Art Biennale, 1999 and 2019; Pierides Museum, Cyprus; Palais des Nations, Switzerland; Museum of Modern Art, Liechtenstein; Casoria Museum, Naples; Villa Manin Contemporary Art, Italy; MAC, Argentina; Palais Liechtenstein, Austria; Museum of Fine Arts, Romania and Museum of Modern Art, Israel. He was commissioned to design the monument to commemorate the Valletta Summit on Migration in Valletta in 2015. His work forms part of many local and international private and public collections.

Briffa has curated exhibitions internationally, including the NRW-Forum, Düsseldorf; the Münchner Künstlerhaus, Munich; Les Rencontres Arles; De Harmonie, Leeuwarden; Spazju Kreattiv and the Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta amongst many others.

Nepanthos

This work forms part of an ongoing series entitled The Islands of Odysseus. The painting resembles a map of a fictitious, maze-like archipelago that appears deceptively playful yet menacing for Odysseus to navigate. The work is a visual metaphor for the psychological landscape of memory and forgetfulness explored in Homer's Odyssey.

The title Nepenthos derives from "nepenthe", a mythical drug mentioned in the epic that banishes grief and painful memories. Helen* receives this opiate from Polydamma, an Egyptian queen, and uses it to help guests forget their burdens through therapeutic forgetfulness.

This concept connects to the Lotus Eaters, encountered by Odysseus on his journey home from Troy. Their consumption of the lotus plant induces blissful amnesia, causing them to lose all desire to return home, representing forgetfulness as complete escape rather than healing.

These two forms of forgetting illuminate memory's paradoxical nature in life's navigation. As Odysseus sails through his treacherous archipelago, he accumulates painful memories of wrong passages and lost companions that burden each new choice. Helen's nepenthe offers calculated relief—temporary respite that enables continued journey—while the lotus promises total escape from navigation itself, erasing not only pain but the hard-won knowledge of dangerous straits and safe harbours.

Odysseus faces constant temptation to abandon his complex route home for the Lotus Eaters' blissful drift. His heroism lies in choosing the meaningful suffering of remembering each lesson over the seductive peace of total forgetting, understanding that while navigational memory brings anguish, it alone enables him to tread treacherous currents and find his way to Ithaca.

OUTLAND

OUTLAND was created as a video, audio, voice and water installation for the Malta Pavilion at the 58th Venice Art Biennale in 2019. It  won the prestigious prize 'Omaggio all’Arte ed all’Innovazione a Venezia 2019'.

The work draws from Homer's Odyssey to explore human indecision and the complexity of our relationships and reflects on Odysseus' refusal of Calypso's immortality and what it truly means to be human.

It depicts our struggle with reality and our desire to escape the anxiety of freedom. It recreates Ulysses' Isle of Calypso – that paradise where he found refuge – as an imaginary space of pure enjoyment, not through Calypso or his longing for Penelope, but through the place itself.

Yet paradise produces a lack of lack. When desire is satisfied, boredom transforms anxiety into something new. We don't want what we think we want – we want the wanting itself. OUTLAND becomes a metaphor for the anxiety of constantly redefining ourselves and our relationships, our refusal to remain within safe boundaries. It extracts moments of willing displacement, choosing uncertainty over peaceful harbours.

The work redefines ‘home’, not as geography, but as our intimate space of enclosure. It reflects on the emotional burden of displacement, the search for belonging, particularly within the Mediterranean. Through its dreamlike narrative, the film speaks to those who have left their homeland seeking better futures, and to those who have chosen to stay, creating their own dream spaces through distraction.

Looking back to mythology, OUTLAND references the condition of emotional distress, the indecision of leaving, of moving from our familiar periphery to an unknown centre. It touches on the pain of loved ones left behind, preserved only in memory.

True to its meaning, OUTLAND presents 'home' as flimsy shelter, a container for our fragile safety and alienation, a place to archive time spent in obsession and procrastination.

Set against Malta's dwindling countryside and Valletta's opulent architecture, the film reflects the shifting relationship between center and periphery on this small island where boundaries blur. The narrative unfolds in a terrain vague, an indistinct space of insecurity that reveals our struggle with reality and our desire to escape freedom's privileged anxiety.

OUTLAND presents the Mediterranean Sea as the ultimate metaphor. The salt pans – a place of separation where sea water is metaphorically held captive by land to extract its salt – with their grid-like, reflective expanse echo the ongoing repetition of geometric structures of the screen's images, visually highlighting man’s calculated intervention at the very edge of nature’s topographical vagueness, challenging the ever-changing boundary between sea and land, that metaphorical barrier reinforcing our uncertain choice between the security of home and the lure of new horizons.
