Milu` Di Lorenzo (Italja/Malta) - A FLOW OF CONSCIOUSNESS
A Flow of Consciousness hija koreografija bbażata fuq il-prattika tal-fluss tal-kuxjenza. Il-prestazzjoni tiżvolġi bħala moviment kontinwu li joħroġ b’mod istintiv minn ħsibijiet mhux iffiltrati u kontradizzjonijiet interni. Tliet żeffiena jgħixu fi flussi paralleli fejn memorji personali u realtajiet esterni, bħat-tensjoni politika u l-ansjetà kollettiva, jinfluwenzaw il-ġisem u r-ritmu.
Ix-xogħol evolva f’pajsaġġ fejn il-kaos huwa dens u persistenti, mingħajr bidu jew tmiem ċar. Permezz ta’ dan il-fluss, il-wirja tistieden lill-udjenza tosserva kif il-piż emozzjonali jieħu l-forma u jiċċaqlaq mingħajr il-bżonn ta’ spjegazzjoni jew kontroll.

Din il-koreografija moderna tagħti ħajja ġdida lil Qolla, ix-xogħol oriġinali ta’ Tanya Bayona ispirat mill-urna tal-ġebel simbolika marbuta mat-tradizzjonijiet ta’ Mother Goddess. Permezz ta’ lenti femminista kontemporanja, din l-adattazzjoni tinvolvi erba’ żeffiena li flimkien jirrappreżentaw l-identità tal-protagonista. Ix-xogħol janalizza u jibni mill-ġdid is-saffi li jiffurmaw il-kuxjenza Maltija, fejn il-wirt kulturali, il-memorja u l-femminilità jiltaqgħu flimkien. Din il-koreografija mhux tfittxija għall-imħabba romantika, imma għas-sens ta’ appartenenza, risonanza u definizzjoni tal-identità u djalogu incarnat bejn il-passat u l-preżent, it-tradizzjoni Maltija u l-invenzjoni, l-individwu u l-kollettiv.

“La Ternura” tesplora kif l-evoluzzjoni soċjali tpoġġi sfida fuq modi tradizzjonali ta’ kif in-nies jirrelataw ma’ xulxin, ibbażati fuq distinzjonijiet. F’kuntest ta’ tkabbir u espansjoni kontinwi, is-soċjetà kontemporanja ma tħalli l-ebda spazju jew ħin biex nieqfu u nirriflettu, u b’hekk issir diffiċli li ninvolvu ruħna f’ħsieb kritiku, nerġgħu nikkunsidraw strutturi li wirtna, u nimmaġinaw alternattivi bbażati fuq il-kura, ir-rispett u l-ugwaljanza li tassew jirrappreżentaw lil kulħadd.
Bħala artisti żgħażagħ ibbażati f’Malta, aħna interessati li noħolqu spazji kemm għal mistoqsijiet personali kif ukoll kollettivi, u nerġgħu naħsbu fuq assunzjonijiet li tgħallimna mingħajr ma qatt sfidajnihom. Nifhmu l-arti bħala għodda qawwija biex nirreżistu dan ir-ritmu kostanti u nqajmu mistoqsijiet sovversivi. “La Ternura” titwieled minn riċerka personali dwar kif jaħdmu r-relazzjonijiet fis-soċjetà tal-lum.

Community Project – Art Under Threat
F’kuntesti ffurmati minn estremiżmu dejjem jiżdied u polarizzazzjoni soċjali, il-libertà tal-espressjoni qed issir dejjem aktar fraġli. Il-vuċijiet jiġu mmonitorjati, il-ġisem jiġi rregolat, u d-differenza spiss titqies bħala theddida. Dan il-proġett se jirrifletti fuq xi jfisser li teżisti, toħloq u tkun viżibbli f’dawn iċ-ċirkostanzi. L-arti tiġi trattata bħala bżonn uman aktar milli privileġġ: att ta’ preżenza f’ambjenti li jinkoraġġixxu s-skiet, il-konformità jew il-biża’.
Il-ġisem isir spazju fejn il-pressjoni tinħass u tiġi negozjata, fejn l-espressjoni tippersisti anke meta tkun limitata. Tingħata attenzjoni lill-esperjenzi reali ta’ limitazzjoni, awtoċensura u reżistenza, b’mod partikolari għal dawk li l-identità jew il-perspettivi tagħhom huma l-aktar vulnerabbli għall-eliminazzjoni. Ix-xogħol jiftaħ spazju għal riflessjoni kondiviża dwar ir-rwol tal-espressjoni artistika llum: bħala mezz biex inżommu l-kumplessità, nibqgħu viżibbli u nikkonnettjaw minkejja d-differenzi. Jistieden lill-parteċipanti jersqu lejn l-arti mhux bħala spettaklu, iżda bħala forma ta’ insistenza kwieta, li tibqa’ titkellem anke meta l-espressjoni tkun mhedda.
Il-parteċipanti tal-Proġett Komunitarju se jieħdu sehem f’residenza ta’ workshop immexxija minn Bruno Duarte. Dan il-workshop se jwassal għal prestazzjoni bla ħlas fil-Ġnien tal- Barrakka ta’ Fuq waqt Dance Festival Malta Day 4 (26 ta’ Lulju).

Rosana Maya & Debbie Falzon (South Africa/Malta) - DUALITÀ
Dualità is a Flamenco dance performance exploring how opposing realities coexist within human experience. Guided by the idea that life is constantly shaped by duality, it examines emotional and conceptual contrasts such as despair and joy, force and vulnerability, and separation and togetherness. Through Flamenco as its expressive medium, these opposites are embodied and embraced. Two women, initially separate, share the stage through contrasting movements soft and forceful, grounded and lifted, uproar and silence. Elements like poured water, crunching sand, striking metal, and interwoven voices enrich both personal and collective narratives.
Expressed through movement, gesture, and shared rhythm, division gradually transforms into co-existence. Disconnection evolves into listening, care, and responsiveness, while maintaining individuality within togetherness. Dualità ultimately affirms the importance of embracing life’s contradictions and choosing collective existence despite division.

A Flow of Consciousness is a reactivated choreography developed through the practice of stream of consciousness. The piece unfolds as a continuous flow of movement emerging from unfiltered thoughts, emotional overflow, and inner contradictions. Rather than pursuing formal perfection, movement surfaces instinctively, shaped by uncertainty, repetition, and interruption. Three performers inhabit parallel yet distinct streams, where personal memories and external realities coexist. Images, sounds, and fragments of the outside world—political tension, collective anxiety, distant and familiar events—permeate the body, altering rhythm, weight, and intention. The work has evolved into a landscape where chaos is dense and persistent rather than playful. There is no clear beginning or resolution, only a sustained state of becoming. Through this shared flow, the piece invites the audience to witness how emotional weight, often silenced or dismissed, can take form, accumulate, and move—without explanation, hierarchy, or control.

Bíbor Tulipán Berettyán (Hungary/Malta) - THE FALLEN
The Fallen delves into the persona of Lucifer, the fallen angel, inspired by Alexandre Cabanel’s The Fallen Angel (1847). The work focuses on the moments immediately following his fall from Heaven, beginning with shock and loss and progressing to rage and rebellion. The dance depicts Lucifer’s struggle with his new condition and resistance to an all-powerful force through repeated attempts to rise and fly. Spoken portions from John Milton’s Paradise Lost depict a psychological watershed moment, as pride and ego drive his rejection of remorse, resulting in isolation and perpetual inner strife.

Sara Bianchi (Malta) – QOLLA
This reimagined and modernised choreographic work revisits Qolla—the Maltese dance piece originally created by Tanya Bayona and inspired by the symbolic stone urn linked to ancient Mother Goddess traditions—through a contemporary feminist lens. Where the original placed one woman among three men, this adaptation casts four female dancers who collectively embody evolving facets of the protagonist’s identity. Through shifting movement languages and a newly forged dance idiom, the work turns inward: questioning, unravelling, and reconstructing the layers that shape both personal and Maltese consciousness. The dancers become mirrors, echoes, and extensions of the self, revealing how Maltese heritage, memory, and womanhood intersect within the Island’s cultural landscape. Rooted in Qolla’s narrative essence yet re-elaborated, the piece honours the original’s emotional core while carving new pathways of expression. It becomes not a search for romantic love, but for belonging, resonance, and self-definition—an embodied dialogue between past and present, Maltese tradition and invention, the individual and the collective. This contemporary adaptation is choreographed by Sara Bianchi, with Nicoletta Pizzicotti as assistant choreographer and is performed by dancers from Company of Dance Arts.

“La Ternura” explores how social evolution challenges traditional ways of relating between individuals based on distinctions. Within a context of continuous growth and expansion, contemporary society leaves no space or time to pause and reflect, making it difficult to engage in critical thoughts, to reconsider inherited structures and imagine alternatives grounded in care, respect, and equality that could truly represent us all. As young artists based in Malta, we are interested in opening spaces for both personal and collective questioning, rethinking assumptions we have learned without previously challenging them. We understand art as a powerful tool to resist this constant rhythm and raise subversive questions. “La Ternura” emerges from personal research into how relationships function in today’s society.

Community Project - Art Under Threat
In contexts shaped by rising extremism and social polarisation, freedom of expression is increasingly fragile. Voices are monitored, bodies are regulated, and difference is often treated as a threat. This project will reflect on what it means to exist, create, and be seen under such conditions. Art will be approached as a human necessity rather than a privilege: an act of presence in environments that encourage silence, conformity, or fear. The body becomes a place where pressure is felt and negotiated, where expression persists even when it is constrained. Attention is given to lived experiences of limitation, self-censorship, and resistance, particularly for those whose identities or perspectives are most vulnerable to erasure. The work will open a space for shared reflection on the role of artistic expression today: as a way to hold complexity, to remain visible, and to connect across difference. It invites participants to engage with art not as spectacle, but as a form of quiet insistence - one that continues to speak, even when expression is under threat.
Community Project participants will take part in a workshop residency led by Bruno Duarte. This workshop, will culminate in free outdoor performance at Upper Barrakka Gardens during Dance Festival Malta Day 4 (26th July).
