Fil-Friġġ wara t-Tadam is the first solo show by Lorella Castillo.
Through playful photographs and small sculptural set-ups, she turns everyday Maltese sayings into things we can see and touch. In doing so, Castillo treats language as a living material: some phrases survive, others disappear, and each choice tells a story about history, identity, and the fast-moving media climate we share.
Her images highlight what we protect, what we display, and what quietly decays beneath the surface of local speech. Curated by Rachelle Bezzina, visitors are invited to laugh, pause, and recognise pieces of themselves in the familiar yet slightly strange scenes. In this space, language is both an archive of memory and an arena of contest. Revealing the resilience, absurdity, and contradictions that shape Maltese cultural memory today.

Wednesday 4th February 19:00
Curatorial tour and Photographic Construction With Lorella Castillo and Ramon Sammut
This session focuses on the technical backbone of Fil-Friġġ Wara t-Tadam. Artist Lorella Castillo and her mentor, master printer and photographic judge Ramon Sammut, will unpack the craft behind the exhibition’s images. From conceptual sketch to final fine-art print, the discussion will cover casting, location scouting, prop selection, lighting strategies, and Lorella’s signature method of shaping mood through chiaroscuro and precise colour grading.
Drawing from Lorella’s meticulous process, where ideas emerge from lived experience and are refined through drawing, staging, and iterative editing, the conversation offers insight into how a photographic narrative is built layer by layer.
Ramon’s technical expertise in post-production, printmaking, and image evaluation provides an invaluable counterpart, guiding the audience through the transformation of a raw file into a resolved artwork. This event invites attendees to step inside the artist’s studio to explore the practical decisions, challenges, and craftsmanship that underpin each final photograph.

Artist and Curatorial Insights with Lorella Castillo and Rachelle Bezzina
This event brings together artist Lorella Castillo and curator Rachelle Bezzina to reflect on the exhibition's conceptual foundations. The conversation will explore the transformation of Maltese idioms into image-worlds, the use of surrealism to both mask and reveal cultural tensions, and the project's broader thematic arc: language as a mirror of collective consciousness.
Drawing on Lorella’s methodology, where ideas emerge from emotional states, everyday encounters, and personal narratives, the session examines how private experience becomes shared visual symbolism. The dialogue also addresses the role of staging, ritual, domesticity, and symbolic objects in constructing the exhibition’s psychological and cultural references.
The event also marks the launch of the exhibition booklet, a document that brings together images, research, and curatorial reflections, offering visitors a deeper engagement with the work.
