As the oceans grow warmer and human activities continue to shape the marine environment, how can we assess the health of our seas?
One answer may come from the animals that live within them. In this Malta Café Scientifique talk, Ms Michela Aquilina, Environmental Compliance Officer and marine biology researcher, presents compelling insights from the DOLPHIN-CLIMASENT project, which explores how bottlenose dolphins can serve as bioindicators for both climate change and human impact in Maltese waters.
This research marks a significant milestone in local marine science with the creation of Malta’s first national dolphin photoidentification catalogue. Drawing on more than eight years of systematic sea-based surveys, individual dolphins are identified by the unique markings on their dorsal fins and bodies. This longterm tracking enables researchers to monitor population health, behaviour, site fidelity, and stress signals over time.
