An artistic research project exploring Gozo’s archaeological and ecological landscapes through the intertwined histories of humans, birds, migration and burial. Beginning with archaeological evidence of birds accompanying the human dead, the research asks what these ancient acts of interspecies intimacy might reveal about relationships between grief, care and the more-than-human world.
During the residency, I will undertake field research at Ġgantija, Xagħra Circle, Latnija Cave, Dwejra Cliffs, Comino Island and the Museum of Archaeology, combining walking, deep listening, field recording, archival research and encounters with local knowledge. Moving between prehistoric burial landscapes and contemporary habitats of migratory birds, the project considers Gozo as a landscape of passage—where human and avian migrations, ancient histories and present-day ecological change intersect.
The residency will lay the foundations for a new body of work exploring our intimate relationships with the world we inhabit, tracing migration, displacement, belonging and grief across human and more-than-human lives
